Suzume no Tojimari Breaks Box Office Records in Japan
Given that Shinkai’s Your Name became one of Japan’s highest-grossing films of all time, there was a lot of hype behind Suzume no Tojimari. Upon release, it delivered on the hype as it earned JPY 1.88 billion (USD 13.49 million) in its first three days in cinemas. Thanks to this box office haul, Suzume no Tojimari has broken Weathering With You’s three-day record, making it the biggest opening ever for a Makoto Shinkai movie. For comparison, Weathering With You earned JPY 1.6 billion in its first three days. Currently, the film is still screening in Japanese cinemas, and there’s no word yet on when it will be released in other countries. Though it is confirmed to get a cinema release outside Japan. Just a few days ago, it was revealed via the film’s official Twitter account that Suzume no Tojimari will be distributed in 199 countries and regions around the world. The announcement also means that Suzume no Tojimari will have the widest worldwide distribution for a Makoto Shinkai movie. This goes to show just how popular Shinkai’s films are all over the world. Suzume no Tojimari Early Reviews
Aside from enjoying a big box office haul, Shinkai’s new movie is also a big hit for critics. For starters, The Japan Times called Shinkai the “master of visuals” in their Suzume no Tojimari review for its impressive art and animation of the movie. Another review by TimeOut called the movie a “visually stunning coming-of-age story.” While the review was slightly critical of the film’s plot, it was still praised overall for being visually breathtaking. Meanwhile, Anime News Network gave the film an A rating in their review, calling the film a fantastic movie with great characters, all while having stunning visuals. Based on the early reviews, the running theme is that Suzume no Tojimari is a must-see for its impressive looks, meaning it should be a must-watch for fans of Shinkai’s works.
