Recently, it was announced that One Piece Red has recorded JPY 7.6 billion (around USD 52.79 million) in box office revenue during its first 10 days in cinemas (via Nikkan Sports News). This box office haul was achieved with 5.05 million ticket sales. With this box office haul, Film: Red is now officially the highest-earning One Piece movie ever, beating the previous record-holder One Piece Film Z which has a JPY 6.87 billion lifetime total box office haul. As Film: Red was released to celebrate the franchise’s 25th anniversary, it’s no surprise that it became a major box office hit. What is a surprise is the speed at which it became the biggest movie in the series – and that’s only in Japan. During its opening weekend, the film recorded the second-highest opening weekend for a movie in Japan, trailing only Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Mugen Train. Just yesterday, the film crossed the JPY 6 billion mark at the box office. And with the film set to release soon in other countries, the movie’s international box office numbers will likely be among the highest among anime movies. One Piece Film: Red is the fifteenth feature film in the franchise, and it follows the Straw Hat Crew as they attend the concert of Uta, the world’s most popular singer. But it is soon revealed that Uta is the daughter of the legendary pirate, Shanks. Shanks is confirmed to make an appearance in the movie alongside the Red Hair Pirates. In a recent interview with the series’ editor, it was revealed that the film explores the relationship between Luffy and Shanks. The movie is currently screening in cinemas across Japan and in select countries such as France. It is also set to release in Fall 2022 internationally in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK, Ireland, and others.
