Despite the adequate execution of the film, MCU actor Hayley Atwell opened up to Digital Spy and revealed that she personally wasn’t in favor of how Doctor Strange 2 took her character, Peggy Carter, in a different direction.
“It was definitely not, you know, the trajectory that I see for Peggy. I would definitely like her to have more to do. It’s so funny, because, you know, I did that 10 years ago, and I love her because I love the people, and you never know [if there could be more].” she explained.
In Atwell’s fleeting participation in the film, Captain Carter, as one of the members of the Illuminati, fights alongside her team against Wanda, where she meets an unsatisfying, brutal death at the hands of the bewitching Scarlet Witch.
When she was first introduced as Agent Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger, the actress and the character received attention as they rooted for her and her relationship with Steve Rogers, aka Captain America (Chris Evans). They were last seen in the 1940s as Avengers: Endgame aftereffects.
Given her character’s untimely demise, Atwell wishes to reprise her role as Peggy so that her character can be more, fight more, and play a much larger role in the MCU, but only if the studios and fans agree.
She noted, “It depends on what Marvel, and what the audiences, want … I’m a custodian of her. Compared to the rest of my career and everything I’ve done or my stage work and doing Mission: Impossible now and all the diversity of roles I’ve played, and the diversity that I get to explore, and to be able to play more complex roles and villains and lots of different things — she is not mine anymore.”
Captain Carter first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s What If? There is no official word yet on whether the Captain will return for Season 2, but hints are dropping that she might, as the show might look into expanding her character’s parallel story.
